Frequently Asked Questions by Parents about English A Class
Parent-Teacher Communication andHomework Diary When will I be able to meet the class teacher to discuss my child’s progress? You will be invited to meet the English class teacher at the beginning of term. If you wish to discuss any issues with the teacher, please contact our school office to make an appointment. Please check your child’s Homework Diary every night and sign it at the end of the week. The diary is a means of communication between the teacher and parents. The class teacher might send you a note informing you about any particular achievements or problems. Feel free to write to the teacher in the diary if you need. You will also receive an English class curriculum letter at the beginning of the term and your child‘s progress report at the end of the term.
House Points What are house points? Students are assigned to one of the three school House Teams: Pegasus, Phoenix and Dragon. Students receive house points for their good work and good behaviour. At the end of each week house points are counted and the student with the most number of house points receives a certificate in the school assembly. The house points are counted and students may consequently receive special certificates for 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 and 350 house points.
Extracurricular Programme – After School Activities
What are after school activities? These take place on Mondays and Tuesdays and provide further development of students’ abilities in sports, arts and crafts, ICT, drama, etc. It is a good opportunity for English class students to interact with other primary students and primary teachers. Pupils are allowed to choose an activity according to their interests.
What if my child is busy on Mondays and Tuesdays after school? If your child cannot attend after school activities, it is important to inform your class teacher about it in advance in writing. Necessary transport arrangements should be prepared by parents as school buses leave only at 4:30 pm on those days.
Will my child receive any homework? How can I help my child with his/her homework? Students are given homework every night and are expected to finish it within 30 minutes to one hour depending on the age of the child.They should be able to complete it independently, but it would be helpful if an adult listened to the child reading out loud. It is essential that your child packs all homework into his/her homework folder and brings it back the following day.
School Reading Books and School Library
My child brings home a reading book almost every day. Is he/she supposed to read it and return it the following day? Yes, students are sent reading books almost every night and are supposed to return them on the following day.
How often can my child use the school library? Primary students use the school library once a week. They are allowed to borrow one book at a time. It should be returned one week later. If your child loses any school books, parents are liable for the cost of the books.
School English Policy
Will my child need to speak English at school at all times? Students are expected to speak in English during lessons and are encouraged to speak in English at any other times. They are allowed to speak their first language on the playground and in the cafeteria.
Can my child wear PE kit and/or sports shoes to school when he/she has PE on the timetable? No, students are expected to wear school uniform at all times. They need to bring their PE kit and sports shoes to school in a separate bag.
What happens if my child forgets to bring his/her lunch card to school? Students need to speak to the canteen manager at the desk in the cafeteria. They should be able to have lunch even if they forgot to bring in their lunch card, but they must bring their lunch card the following day.
What happens if my child loses his/her lunch card? Students need to speak to the canteen manager and ask how they can replace it. Our Teaching Assistants may help with that.
Lost and Found
What happens if my child loses his/her belongings at school? They will need to go to the “Lost and Found” area at the reception desk and ask the receptionist for help. What happens if my child loses his/her belongings on the school bus? First, students should report this to their class teacher. He/she will contact the office to help contact the bus driver/bus ayi to try to find the lost possessions. Next time students use the bus they will need to ask their bus ayi about their lost belongings.
What do I need to know about school buses? Please make sure your child knows which mode of transportation/number of school bus he or she is taking to go home. For your child’s safety, a written notice in advance is necessary for any changes in transportation. It is also essential that your child understands that it is important to remain seated during the whole journey and follow the bus ayi’s instructions when needed. It is the students’ responsibility to get on the school bus on time.
What happens if my child is hurt during school time? Our school’s qualified nurse is available during the school day for minor medical problems or accidents. If your child needs to be sent home you will be notified by phone and will be expected to take your child home.
Does my child need to bring a pencil case with pens, pencils, etc? The school provides all the necessary equipment for working in class, including pens, pencils, glue-sticks, scissors, coloured pens, rulers, etc. Generally students are discouraged to bring their pencil cases to school, as sometimes they get distracted by playing with them, or get upset if they lose some of their belongings. It is recommended to have the above mentioned items at home, so that students can complete their homework.
Does my child need to bring his/her water bottle? Yes, it is important that students bring their water bottles for when they need a drink of water. They can fill their bottles with water from the water dispenser if they wish. Students can also purchase a drink from the school canteen at breaktimes and lunchtimes.
Can my child bring his/her mobile phone to school? Students can bring their mobile phones to school, however they are highly discouraged to do so. Students are not allowed to use their mobile phones during lessons and should keep them in their bags during school time. Our school does not take responsibility for the damage or loss of students’ mobile phones.
