Today, on 3rd of November we had Ha Yeon's birthday party. Ha Yeon shared her birthday cake, some drinks and oranges with EA students and teachers. We were joined by Ha Yeon's brother Jeong Wan, Jenny and Ye Bin. The cake was absolutely delicious, thank you to Ha Yeon's Mum for sending it to school. Happy birthday, Ha Yeon! Hope you have a great year ahead!
We now have a class cyber pet that lives in our Home Page. It's a bunny that we called Cherry. We wrote about her here. You can write messages to her in the Let's Talk page. She will certainly reply to you.
I also created a new page called House Points that you can find under the Students' page here. We will have our house point winners names published there. You may also receive a special award from Mrs. Arbon. Read about it here.
This week the whole school was busy preparing for UN Day. Our class as well as EC will be in charge of activities about China. In English lessons we looked at two traditional Chinese stories and chose one of them for acting out during UN Day. The story is called "The Custom of Sweeping Dust' and it explains why Chinese people always give their houses good clean before Chinese New Year eve. We also made Chinese lanterns to decorate the classroom.
We also continued looking at the new versions of the well known fairy tales. Everybody enjoyed reading a story called "Cinderfella" by Dee Reid based on "Cinderella".
In Science we finished our display work about Healthy Living. We put our drawings on different colour paper with captions saying what we should or shouldn't do to stay healthy.
In ICT students completed their bar and pie graphs showing the results of our family and school Healthy Living Survey.

This week in English students looked at the different versions of Jack and the Beanstalk story. We didn't quite like the ending of the story, so we decided to change it. Each student came up with a new ending of the story and illustrated it beutifully. Read the new story endings here.
In Science we continued our topic on Healthy Living. Students wrote out their Healthy Living Survey and carried it out in the classroom and at home. On Friday they enjoyed interviewing teachers and the students around school asking them questions about their life style. We then showed this information in bar graphs in Maths. Next week in ICT students will learn how to create bar and pie graphs in Microsoft Excell.
In ICT the students continued working on their own websites that will be linked to our class website shortly.
In Spelling we now have three groups.
Green group's spelling patterns this week: 'ur' and 'ir'.
Yellow group: 'or' Red group: short vowel sounds and 'ck'.
This week we are happy to have Jinny back to school. She had a wonderful holiday in Korea and is now ready to get back to her studies at school.
We also give a warm welcome to Frank who moved to our class from English C.
Jinny, our Year 5 student in English A, had to leave school before the holiday. Here is a message from EA to Jinny:

This week in Science we concentrated on learning about healthy living. We discovered that to be healthy we must remember at least 5 things: healthy eating, exercise, keeping clean, getting enough sleep and keeping happy state of mind.
EA students created their own food pyramids and looked at how it helps to keep a balanced diet.
In ICT students started creating their own websites in weebly.com We will link them to our class website when they are more ready.
In English students looked at 4 different types of sentences: statements, questions, exclamations and commands. They learned that different types of sentences need fifferent type of punctuation.

On Friday parents were invited to school to join their children in classses for the whole morning. What a great experience for the students! Our Maths lesson with parents was linked to our topic in Science, Healthy Living. Read about it here.
On Monday and Tuesday students enjoyed rehearsing our play. They thought of some interesting ideas that we added to make the play more amusing and intersting. On Wednesday they finally performed in front of the whole primary school and they were GREAT! Well done English A, I was very proud of you! Everybody remembered their lines and spoke confidently with clear loud voices. What a difference to the first few days at school!
In English we concentrated on the reading comprehension work. Students learned that we must write the answers in full sentences. We also looked at how to form the questions in the present and past tenses. Children also had some practice in using speech marks in their writing.
For Topic this week EA students took part in the whole school PE Department project related to the World Cup Rugby. Our class had to research Ireland and Irish Rugby Team. We found out some interesting information that you can find here, We created a poster in ICT and Art classes. It is now displayed in the foyer near cafeteria alongside with the other school posters.
For Word Level work we looked at the homophones, e.g. son-sun, see-sea, our-hour. Students had a competition when they could get a housepoint if they found 6 pairs of homophones. They were very excited and kept running to me with the new pair of homophones every play time. The winner was certainly Kevin because he found the biggest number of homophone pairs.

In Maths we opened accounts for our students with www.tutpup.com Students then enjoyed playing mental maths games for all 4 maths operations.
Our week started on Tuesday due to the Chinese Moon Holiday. We started it by reading a story called 'The Farmer and His Three Sons'. We looked at how we could change this story into a playscript so that we could act it out for our class Assembly. Students enjoyed thinking of stage directions, changing and adding characters, etc. Eventually we had a new playscript called 'The Farmer and His Children'. Then the students were busy practising to memorise their lines and to say them clearly, loudly and with expression.
Students finished their writing about their past, present and future. They drew some nice pictures and their work was displayed outside our classroom.
In Grammar this week EA students learned about comparative and superlative adjectives: e.g. fast-faster-the fastest, beautiful-more beautiful-the most beautiful, etc.
We also looked at how spelling changes in some of the forms.
They also continued learning different irregular verbs verbs in the Past Simple Tense,
e.g. leave-left, keep-kept, etc.
In Maths we starte d our topic on multiplication of decimal numbers by 10, 100, 1000.
